Digital Ethnography YouTube

This is making the rounds among the Student Life administration here and I thought it was very interesting in the same way that the "The Machine is Us/ing Us" video was. Enjoy!

Wow, thanks for sharing that Kate! I agree that it is quite a compelling piece to watch, as it has got some worthwhile messages, and was filmed in an interesting manner, much like that which was used on "the machine is us/ing us."
I found it interesting when the thoughts that people think technology will solve our problems, especially that technology alone could, as it is a production of humanity and therefore just as fallable. With the integration into our daily lives and practices, technology opens up possibilities for additional forms of failure and may help mistakes become widespread faster. Though this convergence may have positive affects, it has the potential to be used toward negative ends as well, seen by the "Bert is Evil" issue, which turned from humor to hate between the works of people in differnt nations.

You know that this was made by Mike Wesch and his students, the same guy who made The Machine is Us/ing Us? Thanks for posting. Maybe we'll watch it in class Monday as a particular view of Web2.0.

This was really interesting and yet kind of disturbing to watch. I have noticed that all students at DU, and I am guilty of this as well fall into many of the labels that were stated in that video. Yet, when I actually sit and watch what we all are guilty of in this amazing academic environment, it kind of makes me feel sick to my stomach that this is what people are paying thousands of dollars for- to go on facebook, talk on their cell phones, and listen to their ipods. Is this really an educational opportunity?

This video really hit home for me because it speaks volumes about how we students are using out resources. While I know that every student is guilt of these things to an extent, I don't think that every students is necessarily wasting their education on Facebook. That's what great about this video is that it forces you to question what kind of student you are which can be a hard pill to swallow. I just hope that it doesn't send the message that all students are one in the same in this respect. Its a slippery slope and a sticky situation to say the least.

This is certainly not a new trend, since students have been doodling and writing notes during class for eons. I guess we just have to question ourselves as to why we want to waste our class fooling around rather than paying attention. I think a lot of it is that we mostly all just expected that we would go to college, and aren't in the position of some that would give anything just for an opportunity at higher education. Not to mention, our attention spans seem to get shorter by the day! I love that this video is on youtube, it's probably the best way to get the message out there.
